Sources from VICTORIA 2-27-18
- I highly recommend Robert J.Kirkpatrick's From the Penny Dreadful to the Ha'Penny Dreadfuller to start with. I am not sure if this is of interest to her, but he has also more recently produced a book on the authors of penny bloods entitled Pennies, Profits and Poverty.
There is also The Penny Dreadful by Peter Haining and Margaret Dalziel's Popular Ficton 100 years ago.
- Louis James’s Fiction for the Working Man. New edition was out in 2017. Also an important chapter in Ted Geiger’s 2017 book on Smithfield Market and literature. Also, if your student can find a copy, the 1997 private printing of AE Waite’s bibliography.
- Turner, E.S. Boys Will Be Boys. Michael Joseph, 1948.
- Haining, Peter, ed. The Penny Dreadful; or Strange, Horrid and Sensational Tales. Gollancz, 1975.
- Springhall, John. Youth, Popular Culture and Moral Panics: Penny Gaffs to Gangsta-Rap, 1830-1996. St. Martin’s Press, 1998.
