Throughout the podcast, he narrates his attempts to piece together the mystery, hoping that connecting the knowledge and accounts of those who he interviews will bring new evidence to, and ultimately assist him in developing an understanding of exactly what happened to the victim.

Ridgen begins his first episode: “The Family” not with narration, but with the sound of him getting in his car, driving to some place, and introducing himself to(who the listener later learns)is the family of Adrien McNaughton. An unexplained change of setting emphasized by the transition from the noisy rumbling of a driving car, to that of birds singing. Instantly enveloping the listener into the podcast, not through the case itself, but rather the feeling that even before the investigation begins that they are not simply a listener, but a companion.

This sense of involvement smoothens his transition into narration, where he begins by summarizing the case of Adrien McNaughton, as well as what makes it so mysterious.

“The Family,” is an introduction to Ridgen’s revisiting of the seemingly dead end case of missing Adrien McNaughton, who, at the age of five, wondered into the woods only to never be seen again—his body never found.

What Ridgen spends even more time on in his intro however, is an explanation of his motive for solving cold cases. That “…we tend to impose order where there is none, so that any puzzle has a solution.” That humans are naturally drawn to order and distraught by that which they cannot impose order apon, and so either fantasize, or attempt to create it. Something Ridgen finds pride in choosing the latter for.

Again enveloping the listener into the solving of the case, Ridgen emphasizes his use of “we,” to affirm his characterization of the need for order as a trait common to all people, not only those such as himself who choose to partake in the investigations which may soothe said need.

Throughout the body of the episode, Ridgen intertwines interviews with narration. He focuses on important details conveyed by those which he interviews, evaluating key evidence but not fully answering each question he asks while narrating as if to provoke the listener to piece together the evidence themselves—to provide their own order to a case that seems so muddied.

Ridgen does, however, provide a sense of clarity in his selection of interviewees, often ending one interview at the point in which he has discovered who he next needs to talk to. He further explains his reasoning as well as what information he wishes to obtain from those who he interviews. Allowing the listener to focus on the information provided in each interview, rather than on making sense of where each person interviewed fits into the case

The inclusion of interviews as well as Ridgens clarifying narration add depth to his investigation, where he is able to narrate his thoughts on evidence provided each interview as well as all the sensory perceptions listeners don’t receive through a podcast.

The musical variation provided as background noise, as well as the variation in his tone also act to further convey these same often ignored sensory details.

Using a unique cliff hanger, he indicates the end of the first episode, introducing a new subject who he intends to interview before cutting said interview off prior to any valuable information being shared. A tactic which seems to beg the listener to begin the next episode as to seek resolution to the unsolved case.

Word Count: 622

“Someone Knows Something” is a podcast hosted and narrated by David Ridgen where, in order to shed light on what victim’s family members have long believed to be a cold case, Ridgen revisits old leads…

[1

post-737","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
