{"id":80,"date":"2019-10-05T20:52:50","date_gmt":"2019-10-05T20:52:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mattpoland.net\/sherlockpod\/?page_id=80"},"modified":"2020-10-10T17:35:30","modified_gmt":"2020-10-11T00:35:30","slug":"course-expectations","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/mattpoland.net\/sherlockpod\/schedule\/course-expectations\/","title":{"rendered":"Course Expectations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Active Participation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Please\ncome to class prepared to participate in the activities for the day. <strong><em>This\nmeans having read, taken notes on, and thought about any reactions or questions\nyou have to all assigned reading and your classmates\u2019 podcast episodes.<\/em><\/strong>\nYou can keep up with the course schedule by referring to the course calendar. <\/li><li><strong>Listening Along: <\/strong>you should listen to each episode\nwe produce and be prepared to discuss them in class. You are encouraged to\nrefer to other groups\u2019 episodes in your own.<\/li><li>To\n<strong>each class<\/strong>, please bring: the\ncurrent text we\u2019re discussing, a notebook (or method for note-taking on the\ndevice of your choice), and your homework (when it is assigned). <strong>I will assume that everyone has done the\nassigned reading before class begins.<\/strong>&nbsp;\nThose students that do not keep up with the reading will see that\nreflected in their participation grade.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Classroom Expectations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You will be working\ntogether throughout the quarter.<\/strong>\nDisagreement can be productive, and people in many fields depend on\ndisagreement to strengthen their arguments, discover errors, and challenge\ntheir own thinking. However, in order for disagreement to be productive, it\nmust be respectful and courteous. <strong>Be\ngenerous with others and try to assume good intentions.<\/strong> That said, personal\nattacks, disrespectful language, and disrespectful behavior have no place in\nthe classroom. <strong>Hate speech will not be\ntolerated.<\/strong> You are expected to use language and actions that show respect\nfor gender, race, religion, ethnicity, sexuality, and ability in order to\ncreate a safe and welcoming community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>General\nGuidelines for Class Discussion:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The\ncontent and discussion of this course will necessarily be engaging with race,\ngender, political ideology, and violence, including sexual violence. These\ntopics are not abstract; be aware that what you say can have real impacts on\nother people.<\/li><li>Listen\ncarefully to others, and do not attempt to respond before they\u2019ve finished what\nthey have to say.<\/li><li>When\nsomeone else is talking, try not to focus on how you disagree or the way you\nwant to reply. Instead, focus completely on what they\u2019re trying to communicate\nuntil they finish.<\/li><li>Stay\non topic and connect what you have to say with the readings and\/or with what\nothers have said.<\/li><li>Write\ndown your thoughts so you can return to them.<\/li><li>Ask\nfollow-up questions of others, and try to repeat your understanding of what\nthey\u2019ve said as part of that follow up.<\/li><li>Speak\nup even when you\u2019re not sure you\u2019re right.<\/li><li>Try\nnot to dominate conversations. Make sure everyone in your group is included,\nand invite others to speak.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>During week 3, <strong>we will revisit guidelines for classroom and small group discussion<\/strong>, and I will ask all of you to come\nup with additions to discussion expectations. In the first couple of weeks,\nthen, be thinking about what specifically seems to be working in discussions,\nand what doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Technology<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Focusing is difficult when class is conducted online\n\u2013 this is true for students and the instructor. It is expected that you will do\nyour best to responsibly minimize distractions for yourself and the class\ncommunity. We will set expectations together about how we will interact with\neach other and try to maximize our time together while spending as little time\nas is needed in online meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Attendance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although attendance is not required\n(per UW policy),<strong> lack of attendance will\nhave a significant impact on your participation grade<\/strong>. This impact is\nenumerated further in the \u2018Class Discussion\u2019 section above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Missing Class<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It\nis expected that you will attend all classes<\/strong>. However, I understand that people get sick, traffic\ngets bad, things come up. <strong>Please send me\nan email at <\/strong><a href=\"mailto:mjpoland@uw.edu\"><strong>mjpoland@uw.edu<\/strong><\/a><strong>\nbefore class <\/strong>if\nyou will miss so I can plan accordingly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Late Work<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>All\nassignments are due on the time and date specified, and I will not accept any\nassignments submitted in any other way unless given approval ahead of time.<\/strong>&nbsp;\nUnless you have spoken with me ahead of time, late work is due by the\nnext class meeting and you will lose participation points. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Submission Guidelines<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All\npodcast episodes will be submitted to the class Google Drive folder. More\ninformation will be provided in the podcast manual. Blog entries and discussion\nresponses will be posted to the class website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If\nyou have concerns, please come talk to me. For assistance with MLA formatting,\nI also recommend the Purdue OWL website (<a href=\"http:\/\/owl.english.purdue.edu\/)\">http:\/\/owl.english.purdue.edu\/)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Academic Integrity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plagiarism,\nor academic dishonesty, is presenting someone else\u2019s ideas or writing as your\nown. In your writing for this class, you are encouraged to refer to other\npeople\u2019s thoughts and writing \u2013 as long as you cite them. As a matter of\npolicy, any student found to have plagiarized any piece of writing in this\nclass will be immediately reported to the College of Arts and Sciences for review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Accommodations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If\nyou need accommodation of any sort, please let me know so I can work with the\nUW Disability Resources for Students Office (DRS) to provide what you require.\nThis syllabus is available in large print, as are other class materials.
